I met a young blues player named Weston when I was doing guitar repair at the Chicago Guitar Center. After years of fighting the long scale length of an old Peavey guitar, he discovered a better fit in the 3/4 size Squier Mini and Ibanez Mikro guitars. We helped Wes supercharge both guitars by replacing the stock pickups with new ones and simplified string changing by installing Planet Waves Auto Trim tuners. We set both guitars up to his custom specs and his playing has been improving ever since. So much so that he made an appearance at Chicago’s recent Blues Fest. He dropped us a line and sent some pictures. Way to go Wes!
Hey Steve,
Just wanted to let you know that the new guitar is awesome! Here are some pics of it at work at Blues Fest.
Thanks,
Wes
Hey Steve! Glad to see you guys are doing well…My guitars are still the bomb and I get compliments on them all the time…I have just acquired a new guitar from a company called Goldfish Guitars…Small company but they wanted to do a sponsorship for me…My problem is that the pick up (a humbucker) is like the ones that came in my Fender and the Ibanez…it sucks. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on a good Bluesy humbucker pick-up that I could put in it?

Here is the link to the one they gave me….Let me know what you can think of..
Thanks
Wes
Weston,
Great hearing from you. That’s terrific news about Goldfish. Congrats. Pickup wise, we are big big fans of Jason Lollar’s work (www.lollarguitars.com). His Imperial humbuckers are awesome – I’m putting one into a Gibson ES-137 today. We’ve also recently come upon a couple of smaller companies – Porter Pickups (www.porterpickups.com) and J.S. Moore Pickups (www.tonefordays.com). We’ve heard them all and give these a thumbs up too.
Let us know what you come up with!
